Traditional media has been afforded great privilege. The idea of a proactive, honest media deeply involved in the serious affairs of a society justifies that position.

The Leveson report - A lesson for Ireland

The scandalous behaviour of sections of the media in Britain led to the Leveson Inquiry and the corruption it has exposed. Sadly, we can no longer argue that all of the Irish media has successfully resisted the standards and behaviour that led to the inquiry. We can, however, learn a lesson on concentrated media ownership. News International became a state within a state and, therefore, too powerful to control. Despite the revolution in communications and digital media the parallels are obvious and should not be ignored.
