GAA in its best light

NO matter who brings Sam Maguire home after tomorrow’s All-Ireland football final between Donegal and Mayo, the game marks the dawning of a new era for the GAA.

Not for decades have excitement levels been so high as in the build-up to this clash between rival counties and rare visitors on final day at Croke Park.

It is great to see two counties at Croke Park who have not been involved for so long in one of the year’s sporting highlights. It is 61 years since the coveted cup was brought back to Mayo, and two decades since Sam was celebrated in Donegal.

For a refreshing change, the gold and green of Donegal and the green and red of Mayo replace the more familiar colours of victorious Kerry, Cork, and Dublin teams. It is wonderful to see tradition alive in counties which have been out of the limelight for so long. A sporting, skilful game will showcase the GAA at its best.
