Closing chapter on children’s dark ages

It is with grave concern for the rights of children that I read the article by Fergus Finlay (Opinion, Jun 26).

Closing chapter on children’s dark ages

There must be stringent structures to protect the most vulnerable in our society, not alone for little children, but those who are reaching old age.

Mr Finlay rightly pointed out if you don’t change the culture, then the failures of the past are bound to repeat themselves. Of course parents want the best for their children and adult children want the best for their ageing parents in their golden days.

I know from past experience what can happen with unscrupulous persons in authority, dressed in sheep’s clothing, who have acted in the utmost cruelty on vulnerable children, and then we wonder about suicide figures.

I’m ever hopeful we can move away from the dark ages of that terrible tragedy exposed in the Ryan Report.
