Don’t change vehicle numbering system

Our vehicle numbering system, which has been in operation since the late 1980s, is the essence of simplicity and clarity and has attracted much favourable comment from abroad.

Don’t change vehicle numbering system

Little wonder it is disliked by the Society of Irish Motor Industry.

The arguments put forward by the SIMI for its abolition are weak and have more to do with protecting the financial interests of its members than catering for the needs of the buying public without whom there would not be a business to begin with.

The fear of 2013 is laughable as is the claim that the system gives rise to an urban rural divide. How could it? The letters indicate the county of origin and no more.

Finally, the system as it stand is, in part at any rate, easily remembered by the casual observer — a vital ingredient in identifying vehicles involved in accidents or crime.

I would strongly urge the Government to leave well enough alone.
