A few months ago Enda Kenny, used Dáil privilege to falsely accuse the Vatican (and by implication Pope Benedict) of obstructing investigations into abuse issues.

The histrionic and demagogic language used almost made one believe his sincerity. Fast forward to February 2012 and the Taoiseach and Eamon Gilmore are behaving in the most embarrassing and sycophantic manner to the representative of one of the most oppressive one-party regimes in history.

One can imagine the reaction had the visitor been someone like the late Gen Augusto Pinochet — certainly a man with blood on his hands also, but not in the same league as the Chinese regime. Makes one ashamed to be Irish.
