Missing fishermen - Hope for the families

WHEN tragedy strikes, nothing is more despairing than the interminable wait for news of missing loved ones. Thus the recovery of bodies of crewmen from the trawler Tit Bonhomme is a welcome breakthrough in a harrowing ordeal for the families of the lost fishermen.

Missing fishermen - Hope for the families

While the deep sense of despair will not be eased until all the missing bodies are recovered, yesterday’s recoveries marked the first glimmer of positive news since the search began after the boat had foundered on the rocks last Sunday, resulting in a tragedy from which only one member of the crew was saved.

This event has had the effect of uniting families and communities. In all weathers, volunteers from Waterford, West Cork, Dublin and Egypt have combed the coastline, supporting the painstaking search at sea off Union Hall and Glandore involving divers from the naval service and the gardaí, combined with the tireless efforts of fishermen, members of the coastguard, and the lifeboat service.

Local people have performed Trojan work, including the provision of a catering unit on the pier to feed the searchers. Vital services of compassion and care have also been provided by the local clergy.

The breakthrough has given cause for hope that those still missing will now be recovered so that their loved ones can pray and grieve in peace.
