A legend retires - Thank you, John Hayes

JOHN HAYES played his 212th and final game for Munster last night — 14 years after his first — bringing the curtain down on a stellar career that epitomised authenticity, commitment and decency.

Most of all the Cappamore farmer’s list of honours is a spectacular endorsement of his exemplary work ethic.

He played in all four of Munster’s European Cup finals, culminating with longed-for triumphs in 2006 and 2008. He was an ever-present cornerstone for Ireland throughout the decade, playing in 10 successive Six Nations campaigns, 55 consecutive matches in the tournament up until 2010, including the Grand Slam of 2009. After that win he famously skipped victory celebrations to immediately return to his family farm.

Even if someone eventually surpasses his achievements it is hard to imagine that they will win so completely the affections of Bruff’s, Shannon’s, Munster’s and Ireland’s rugby fans. The Bull was, and is, the real thing. He has set a benchmark most of his successors will struggle to reach. Thank you John Hayes.
