Putting safety first

AS state agencies go, the Road Safety Authority has had remarkable success. The latest figures show its policies have been highly effective in reducing carnage on the roads — while 177 people were killed so far this year, it is a welcome change from the appalling death toll of 640 in 1972.

Putting safety first

With thousands of motorists taking to the roads over the festive season, drivers and pedestrians alike should heed the appeal to put safety first this Christmas.

Despite complaints about the nanny state and the zero tolerance ethos of the drink-driving laws, the stricter regime will definitely save lives.

Up and down the country, meanwhile, in towns, cities and rural areas, people are understandably preoccupied with financial problems.

As a result, there is a risk that elderly neighbours and those living alone may be forgotten.

Look out for them and make sure they are safe, warm and secure.

We wish all our readers a happy, peaceful Christmas and a prosperous new year.
