Our political elite escaping cuts and pain

OVER three years after this country was plunged into recession by the incompetence and greed of bankers, developers and senior civil servants, and facilitated by reckless politicians, the knife is out.

It is being applied with abandon to all sectors of society, both the public and private sectors.

There have been cuts in the numbers of gardaí, nurses, teachers, special needs assistants, etc, and also record jobs losses in the private sector.

There is but one sector that has remained untouched, and that is our political class, the very people who are supposed to lead by example. We still have the same number of councillors, TDs and senators as we did three years ago, even though we are now effectively being run by the troika.

Promises about political reform seem to be cynically shelved away.

There is one simple question that the media needs to start asking of our leaders: “How can you expect someone to suffer something you are not prepared to suffer yourself?”
