Powerless students must protest to be heard

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with the statement in Maurice Fitzgerald’s offensive letter, “Students should just stick to lectures” (November 22).

Powerless students must protest to be heard

Indeed, students should be able to concentrate on their studies. Instead, they are faced with the constant uncertainty as to whether they will bear the brunt of the current financial crisis.

Being a student in one of the most expensive EU states is challenging enough, without the prospect of further fee rises. The misguided notion that students are “middle and upper class pups” who can afford “pub crawls and moonlighting” is not a true experience of youth and doesn’t reflect the reality of student life in 2011.
