Cox could help us deal with the ECB

AT the time of our last presidential election in 1997, the greatest problem facing this country was the very uncertain and fragile peace which ensued from the Northern troubles and the Good Friday agreement.

Cox could help us deal with the ECB

Of all the candidates then standing for election Mary McAleese was uniquely equipped to facilitate the peace process. Her presidency has been a testimony to this and her role and influence in normalising Northern politics cannot be over estimated.

Now, the greatest problems facing this country are economic. Just as our present problems have stemmed from our membership of the EU, so the solution must also rest with Europe. Among the candidates, one stands above the rest in being able to deal with our European colleagues. I refer to Pat Cox, former president of the European Parliament, where he was an outstanding success. He is the best known Irishman in European politics and carries huge respect in the corridors of power. Just as McAleese could act as facilitator in the Northern peace process, Cox can help resolve our current issues with the ECB. Hopefully, Fine Gael will put old party loyalties to one side and in the national interest select the best candidate for the times we live in.
