THE tens of thousands of people using Cork’s Kinsale Road roundabout every day will not, unless they are of a certain age, remember when one of the region’s great eyesores dominated that corner of the city.

The 170 acres beside the roundabout was once a landfill dump, stinking, filthy and over flowing. The smell was, especially in a hot summer, sickening and wind-blown waste scarred the neighbourhood.

All is changed. Forty years, three million tonnes of waste, €30 million and the sterling efforts of the local authority have created a wonderful public space.
