FOR a society that likes to present its country as a green and beautiful land we leave a lot to be desired in the area of environmental protection.

For years developers, local authorities, industry and most farmers scoffed at the idea, regarding environmental protection as an unwarranted intrusion into their affairs.

Thankfully, there has been a considerable if hard-won change in attitudes, though some diehards are happy to behave as if they have no environmental responsibilities of any kind.
