We shouldn’t throw out our religion as well

OUR recklessness and tendency to ignore the little things has cost us dearly in every sphere, most recently with the loss of our sovereignty.

We shouldn’t throw out our religion as well

Religious tolerance was a long time coming, but having taken it to our hearts, we have reached the point where it seems unacceptable to have any symbol or image of our Catholic faith appear in the public domain, although we are still a Catholic country.

The images now accompanying the evening Angelus on RTÉ are but one small example of this; a dizzying array of every kind of activity, designed to distract from its intended purpose.

The secular agenda driving this country, under the guise of tolerance for anything and everything, has no tolerance whatsoever for the thousands of us who still practise the faith.

Yet, it seems everyone is yearning for meaning and purpose, for a belief to sustain them, for hope in something deeper than our superficial existence. Would RTÉ let the Angelus bell be what it is?

A call to prayer, and let it be accompanied by a meaningful image, such as the beautiful Old Masters paintings of the annunciation used some years ago. It has long been said that those who believe in everything end up believing in nothing at all. There is no need to throw our faith out along with everything else.

We will be the worse for it.
