EDUCATION Minister Ruairí Quinn has challenged Catholicism’s traditional place in education by suggesting that at least half of the schools under the control of local Catholic clergy be transferred to other patrons.

The Archbishop of Dublin has acknowledged that this would more accurately reflect contemporary Ireland but other Catholic voices seem less sure or enthusiastic.

It would be surprising if this was not the case as a structure that served Ireland well for generations may be dismantled. Nevertheless, today’s virtual Catholic monopoly is anachronistic.
