We should ignore the ‘green’ doomsayers

JOHN FITZGERALD’S letter on the carbon tax (March 18) was long on rheortic and noble ideals and short on details of how to achieve same.

Bar the usual Luddite view of tax and it will be all okay, people will go and use less.

I have to ask people of these views the following: How do you propose that where people live outside major towns and cities of Ireland that they get to work where there is no suitable or non existent public transport?

Backers of the tax will say we should demand such, then I’m sure then they will have no bother paying more taxes for public transport to be funded?

How do they propose that their foodstuffs, and everyone elses is delivered to their supermarkets — canal boat or horse drawn wagons? How do they propose vital services and international communications will be kept open around the world without jet travel? Are we to embark on sailing ships again?

Oddly enough, for a material that is supposedly in very short demand going by the peak oil doomsayers, OPEC has stated they can match demand in any quantity that was shortfalled by the Libya situation. In fact the world has enough oil and processes to win oil out of coal and shale oil for the next 500 years. It is speculation by markets and profiteering by greedy governments, egged on by green hysteria and nothing else that drives our prices.

Realistically, it is now just the planititive cry of the lone green luddite that insists the oil is finished and insists that it “for the children” that we backward our society.

Frankly let’s drive and enjoy and try and profit, and let our children look out for themselves. No one looked out for us when we were children.
