Undoubtedly it will give rise to some protests from the usual never-say-dies but the vast majority of Irish people will welcome it as an expression of the new relationship of equals that now characterises our links with our nearest neighbour.

It’s four years since England played Ireland in Croke Park. That event was a kind of dry run for the Queen’s visit and it turned out to be one of the truly great days. Not only was it, despite considerable apprehension, a peaceful and dignified day, Ireland won the game too. If it comes up in conversation our President can now offer some advice on cricket as well. The Queen’s visit is a development we should welcome.
