THE Dublin City Coroner yesterday found that Gerry Ryan died of heart failure probably triggered by cocaine. Ryan’s death, like any other in similar circumstances, was tragic.

Those closest to him referred to the great personal and professional stress that undermined his wellbeing in the weeks just before his death.

It is difficult to reconcile the image of robust, gregarious and outspoken Ryan with the idea of someone so threatened and undermined. And there is the lesson. Appearances can deceive and if someone as confident as Gerry Ryan, someone as alive and energetic, is so tormented that they can lose sight of the support loved ones and friends can offer then anyone can.
