THE health police can be some of the most intolerant of any campaign groups in society but then that may be because we are so often unreceptive to ideas that might improve our lives.

This is especially so if even moderate sacrifice is involved. In recent times there has been a debate about women combining motherhood with careers and the difficulties that can bring.

A Government-sponsored study, Growing Up in Ireland, has found, among other things, that women with a good education are more likely to drink during pregnancy than someone with a poorer education.
