Speed cameras - Whatever it takes

ANYONE who heard Christina Donnelly speak during the week about how her life changed when her son Brendan and his friend Lee Salkeld were killed by a drunken driver will agree with more or less any measure designed to make our roads safer.

Speed cameras - Whatever it takes

On Monday, a network of speed cameras will go live on the country’s roads with that objective in mind. Though a great emphasis, correctly, was focussed on changing our attitude to drink driving, experience shows that speed also plays a very significant part in very many road fatalities. If these cameras make it more difficult for those who drive irresponsibly then they are to be welcomed.

There must be a caveat though. It is hard to be entirely comfortable with the idea of a private business being involved in administering our laws and this aspect of the project will have to be supervised appropriately.
