Why can’t we take a lead from Iceland?
They too suffered a catastrophic financial meltdown caused by bad governance and links between politics and business, as in Ireland, but not only has Iceland’s banking inquiry been completed and all the senior management in their banks replaced, its people took to the streets. They ejected their government and in the process prevented those who created the economic mess using the authority of the state and taxpayers’ money to protect their friends in the way Fianna Fáil is doing in Ireland.
The new Icelandic government has restructured its banking system, refocused its economy towards its traditional strengths and its politicians have now produced one of the most far-reaching freedom of information acts in the world, surpassing even that of Sweden.
