WHY is all this talk about the possibility of Michael McDowell applying to join Fine Gael?

Surely he will join Fianna Fáil, a party with which he has had a long affinity. After all it could be mutually beneficial. They need a new leader and he wants to found a new party which he could do by remodelling Fianna Fáil in his own image.
