Norris wasted as a powerless first citizen
I believe a man of his calibre and standing, if elected, would resign as a result of frustration with the limitations of the office.
The office of president is a non-executive position and, as such, in an economic situation where there are thousands upon thousands of angry people without jobs and many unable to service their mortgages because of the greed of bankers and developers, plus a Government that facilitated this situation, David Norris would feel powerless to help.
I would not vote for him as president with no executive powers. As a senator, he has some influence, as he pointed out last Friday night, but as president he would have none.
Surely after watching the recent Prime Time programme which exposed how ministers and independents supporting the Government look after their own patch at the expense of the rest of the country, it is time we adopted a more enlightened system of government.
I have no doubt if those who back David Norris for president agreed to try to change the constitution and create an executive type of presidency similar to that of the USA, the whole country would come in behind him.
We badly need change and, more importantly, leadership. I believe that in David Norris, we have that leader – a man who would put the people of this country before greed and profit.
