Truth and error – as an old poet saw it

AS a poet reading the letters to the Irish Examiner (March 19) about the scandal surrounding Cardinal Brady, I was reminded of a poem written 150 years ago.

It goes as follows:

“Truth, crushed to earth shall rise again.

The eternal years of God are hers;

But error, wounded, writhes in pain,

And dies among her worshippers.” William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878).
