100 caps - Here’s to you John Hayes

Today John Hayes becomes the first rugby player to win 100 caps playing for Ireland. It seems particularly fitting that he should reach this milestone playing against the auld enemy, England.

Many people will remember him from one of the greatest Irish sporting occasions of all time – that never-to-be-forgotten day when Ireland first played England at Croke Park. Before the game, there were fears of ugly scenes, but there was a respectful silence for those wishing to sing the British national anthem.

One sensed the enormous pride of the Irish players during the rendition of Amhrán na bhFiann. People will never forget the raw emotion etched on the face of John Hayes as he struggled to hold back the tears.

During his 10-year international rugby career he has helped Ireland win a Grand Slam and three Triple Crowns, as well as helping Munster to win the Heineken Cup twice. Win, lose or draw today, we salute him and wish him all the best for the remainder of his illustrious career.
