Roaming reporters need to say it in French

IS it not rather inept that not a single reporter in RTÉ can pronounce the name of that stricken city Port au Prince? Surely the hint is in the middle preposition “au” that we are “en Francais”.

Perhaps it is a lack of confidence, but no – when they were abroad following the Rugby Union they were all well able to deal with “Parc des Princes” and doubtless order up the “coq au vin” in impeccable dialect. Their intrepid reporter “en scene” did initially make a somewhat unconvincing attempt before dropping back into the comfort of the pack. Are we now distinguishable from the stereotype of our British neighbours in regard to matters French only by our tall leprechaun hats, orange faux beards and plastic hammers ?
