Coastline is crumbling – it’s time to act

WOULD Environment Minister John Gormley stop preaching about the climate changes that “will” affect Irish landscapes and buildings in the future (Irish Examiner, September 15).

Coastline is crumbling – it’s time to act

Our coastline is disappearing in front of our eyes now. The entrance to Cork Harbour is crumbling as sections of the cliff are falling in White Bay, Graball Bay and Weaver’s Point.

Even Cobh has had landslides. Every heavy rainfall, storm and high seas cause further destruction.

I know it is very important that Ireland is represented in Copenhagen next December at the UN conference on climate change, but what will the outcome be – a chunk of taxpayers’ money for a delegation, more talks, more plans?

Preventative measures to rebuild and protect our cliffs and coastline must begin now. Surely this would be more cost-effective than loss of land, homes and possibly someone’s life.
