LOYALTY to political colleagues is a trait which is worthy and noble and should be encouraged, but in the case of ceann comhairle John O’Donoghue on the issue of alleged excessive spending of taxpayers’ money by way of exorbitant expenses on hotels and travel, perhaps this loyalty is misplaced.

The Dáil should ask Mr O’Donoghue to issue a statement on the matter.

Despite the fact that the ceann comhairle occupies a very significant role in our system of government where he/she is meant to be above the day-to-day thrust of partisan politics, no one is above investigation.
