Municipal vandalism

THE removal of the mural on the Lee Fields (Irish Examiner, August 12) was an act of municipal vandalism. The painting over in green of a work of art is akin to the Taliban demolishing the Great Buddha in Afghanistan.

Municipal vandalism

To describe a mural depicting Terence McSwiney, the martyred lord mayor of Cork as “litter” is a gross insult to the people of Ireland.

Also the symbol of Fianna Éireann was obliterated. This scout movement was founded by Countess Markiewicz and Bulmer Hobson, icons of Irish history. Cork city is awash with ugly graffiti which says nothing. But when some young people display talent of national interest the censor appears like a thief in the night.

The city council should encourage such spirited youth in their endeavours and ignore the Taliban in our midst. Freedom of expression is a long battle won by the Irish people. Cherish it.
