Is the political will there to beat crime gangs?

ONE hopes the bill to deal with criminal gangs and jury intimidation doesn’t turn out to be a white elephant like the ASBOs.

Is the political will there to beat crime gangs?

In theory, it should mean the end of organised crime gangs and criminal families, if properly enforced, as all that’s required is the word of a garda to prove someone is guilty of gang membership.

It sounds simple, but in practice one can’t help wondering that even if there are enough gardaí brave enough to put their lives and their families’ lives at risk of reprisal from these thugs, will the judges put them away for long enough sentences and will the overcrowded prison system be able to cope with the numbers?
