Illegal dumping - An affront to us all

CORK County Council is to be congratulated for yesterday securing convictions for illegal dumping.

Evidence gathered by a hidden CCTV system was used in a test case to impose fines on €1,000 plus other costs totalling nearly €2,000 on three individuals. This victory will allow local authorities right across the country take the gloves off in the battle against those indifferent, contemptible vandals who dump rubbish illegally around our towns and cities.

This is anti-social behaviour of the worst kind. Local authorities provide facilities for the proper disposal of waste and they must be used. We are lucky enough to live in a beautiful country and those greedy, indifferent individuals who threaten that environment must be punished severely. Let us hope that yesterday’s victory encourages authorities everywhere to vigorously confront this behaviour which is an affront to us all.
