Great project at the mercy of snails or eggheads

HAVING heard radio interviews and read your feature article (May 9), I am blown away by the Spirit of Ireland wind energy proposal.

Great project at the mercy of snails or eggheads

If their projections are correct we could be self-sufficient in power within five years and become net exporters of green power.

All the work undertaken by this group up to now is for free because they believe so passionately in this project with its capacity to make a significant impact on our unemployment problem. The benefits to the exchequer would run into billions of euro.

Now I am waiting to see how we can screw it up. Some snail in some far-flung corner, some egghead living 300km from the proposed dam objecting because some long forgotten Irish hero – or his dog – died on that particular spot – and of course the gombeen man who sees an opportunity to relieve the Government of taxpayers’ money.

Should all or any of them fail, we can always rely on the politicians to make a mess of it.

Prof Igor Shvets and his merry band deserve nothing but thanks for this project. They have brought in experts from all over the world to confirm all this is easily done and executed.

Now let’s wait and see if the naysayers can stop it.
