Debt to bats

KERRY county councillor Donal Grady, who complains (November 28) about the expenditure of €60,000 on bat conservation, assumes this money would otherwise be spent on social housing.

Debt to bats

This is an insignificant part of Kerry County Council’s 2006 budget of €250m, much of which is misspent. For example, why did the council spend €30m more on roads than was raised in motor tax?

I would agree not enough money is being spent on social housing, health and education, but by attacking bats he has picked the wrong target; it is we humans who are destroying their habitat and we therefore have a moral obligation to protect them.
