Brewery a victim of multinational forces

IT is regrettable that some recently announced business decisions taken in the boardrooms of Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Edinburgh will result in the closure of the Beamish and Crawford brewery in Cork city centre.

Brewing has taken place there since at least 1650, and possibly as far back as 1500.

Located at the heart of medieval Cork, the brewery plays an important role in the social, sporting and economic life of the city and 160 workers are currently employed at the site.

Notwithstanding the fact that the Beamish and Crawford brewery is currently operating at full capacity and its flagship stout enjoys a healthy market share, it appears as if this is merely the latest piece of Cork and Irish history to fall victim to the relentless march of overpowering multinationals.
