Fighting criminals - A stronger CAB better for us all

THE principle of following the money trail has been one of the cornerstones of criminal investigations for many years. The principle of seizing criminals’ assets is a much more recent but nonetheless effective innovation.

Last year the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) collected more than €20 million in either taxes or property and recovered more than €550,000 in social welfare payments that were obtained fraudulently.

On the face of it these figures are reassuring enough but must be put in the context of overall criminal activity in the country.
