Last year the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) collected more than €20 million in either taxes or property and recovered more than €550,000 in social welfare payments that were obtained fraudulently.

On the face of it these figures are reassuring enough but must be put in the context of overall criminal activity in the country.
