Why blame service that compares so well?

YOUR columnist Terry Prone (September 8) raises important issues when she seems to defend the public service from “being rubbished constantly by political parties and commentators”.

She then seems to say the opposite, however, when she adds “we may have more people in the public service than many other countries do”.

What is the real story?

My information is that the cost of the Irish public service is lower, as a proportion of our total GDP, than in most developed countries.

If that is so, why are powerful politicians and influential commentators in the media blaming the public service for the recession?
