SINCE the Olympic Games in Beijing there has been much debate as to which events we should dedicate our limited resources and talents in order to get the best return.

Why amateur boxing is on a hiding to nothing

Apart from lobbying for the inclusion of hurling, Gaelic football and rugby, I don’t think we are ever going to produce top-class athletes in sufficient numbers at track and field or swimming to be a force in future games.

Let’s be honest. Olympics apart, most Irish people couldn’t be bothered about these sports.
