EU begins to look like a plutocracy

THE Lisbon Treaty is dead? Long may it remain so. One can only hope our government, in some last-ditch attempt to resurrect flagging reputations, won’t be tempted to set aside the decision by subterfuge?

EU begins to look like a plutocracy

There is little question that the EU, with its touted claims of adherence to democratic principles, is rapidly degenerating into something akin to plutocracy (a system where few rule many), one more ‘big brother’ who knows better what is best for the rest.

In true democracies, leaders are elected by the people, not by individuals and/or groups claiming to represent the collective interests of voters. While many EU states have ratified those 260 pages of compound confusion, it would be interesting to see how well the treaty would have fared had it once again been placed before the people in proper referendums. When one considers what happened in France and Holland the last time a democratic process prevailed, I suspect not at all well.
