A vote for Lisbon is a vote for economic health
Each new EU treaty has been of a clear advantage to our country.
If Ireland had not ratified the Single European Act in 1986 and the Maastricht Treaty in 1992, there would not be a single currency or an internal market in Europe. More than 80% of all Irish people have confidence in the operation of the single market and as a result of our participation in the eurozone, our exporters have been able to sell into the markets of 14 other EU countries without fear of currency fluctuation.
After the ratification of the Maastricht Treaty, Ireland was able to negotiate over €7.4bn in structural fund aid for the period 1994-99. This is an example of what Ireland can achieve as a respected member of the EU.
On the back of a yes vote for the Lisbon Treaty, we can deal with issues of importance to us, whether it is the CAP review talks 2008-13 or the world trade talks, once we are a key player and not someone watching the game from the stand, incapable of influencing any policy moves.
We must ask ourselves where we want to be the day after the votes are counted. I want Ireland to be at the heart of the EU, developing policies which will ensure our economic wellbeing and that of the EU as a whole.
