PERHAPS Darren Mac an Phríora (‘FG complacent on Irish language policy’, Letters, April 25) should have contacted the Israeli embassy rather than the Fine Gael frontbench with regard to how best to revive the Irish language.

Israel — a country with very similar demographics to Ireland — has a proven track record of successfully reviving its national language of Hebrew, which was mostly used in a religious context, and making it a vibrant, living and spoken language in a modern, progressive, bilingual country.

All of that was achieved within the past 60 years since independence — yet we have been trying for more than 100 years to achieve the same goal, but we have failed utterly.
