Ferry plan a threat to rowing

ON a recent visit to Cork I saw a poster asking what would happen if the long traditions of hurling and rugby there were threatened and comparing the probable outcry and consequent action to prevent any threat to these time-honoured transporting traditions with the lack of response to a real threat to an even older sporting tradition — rowing on the Lee.

Following up on the issue, I was amazed this threat to rowing was ever even contemplated. We live in a country which has few purpose-built sports facilities, and while those for field team games are inadequate, other sports are in an even worse situation.

Our notion of sports facilities is only recently beginning to look beyond a grass field for team games with construction of all-weather multi-sports surfaces in some areas.
