Let’s hope we have now closed the Haughey era

IT’S only natural to sympathise with a politician on the way out — even if he leaves a trail of unanswered questions to do with his financial probity as a member of government.

All of that aside, I could never work up any enthusiasm for a man who always seemed tainted by his association with that dirty little crook, Haughey.

And then there was Bertie’s gombeen touch — “hiya, lads”. We’ve had far too many of that type in all parties and all generations.

The best we can hope for now is a clean break with the Haughey era and the Galway tent. That might not be such an unrealistic expectation because most of our dodgy ‘developers’ seem to have vanished east of the Danube.
