Mortgage insurance challenge to councils

I WAS interested to note that mortgage protection insurance is one of the types of policy that consumer watchdogs recommend avoiding.

Unfortunately, this is not an option for all homeowners.

Those who buy their home from their local authority under the shared ownership scheme are required by legislation to purchase mortgage protection insurance.

Furthermore, they are required to purchase this insurance from the local authority — at a rate up to three times higher than a private insurer might charge.

Perhaps the Consumers Association of Ireland would consider highlighting this unfair, anti-consumer law.
