REGARDING the publication of official documents in Irish, we should differentiate between the importance of the spoken and written language.

There are still a few old people in the gaeltachtaí who do not speak English, but they would probably not be able to read very well, either in English or Irish.

There is a small but significant minority of people in Ireland whose first language is Irish, but I think it would be difficult to find anyone who could read Irish, but not be able to read English.
