Cut the red tape strangling forestry

FORESTRY’S role in combating climate change is unequivocal. In Ireland, the potential for further sustainable forestry is immense.

This is due to superb growth rates, a vast suitable landbank and a proven rural-based indigenous industry. Demand for timber is increasing, as is the renewable wood for the energy market, and the importance of our forests in protecting water, wildlife and biodiversity is slowly being recognised.

Barriers to further afforestation need to be reviewed immediately. The Department of the Environment and the EPA should remove the red tape and dubious science that is hampering this vibrant sector. If environmental benchmarking is introduced, with Ireland’s present shameful carbon emissions, heads should roll.
