Violent activities compromise community development
He also indicated a hope that this would lead paramilitaries to become more involved in social activity, leading to the betterment of community life.
It is therefore a disgrace that the opportunity such grant aid could provide has been compromised by the violent activities of members of loyalist paramilitary organisations.
No money should be granted to any group engaged either directly or indirectly in the intimidation, killing or disabling of citizens with whom it does not agree.
At the same time, we must acknowledge the legitimate work in areas where the problems of social disadvantage are manifest. The latter should not be penalised on account of the former.
Ireland has had enough of guns, explosives and drugs leading to intimidation, fear, death, disablement and destruction. There is now a window of opportunity to take advantage of the Northern political consensus for each to work for all and all to work for each.
Money is essential for individual and community development. It will be scandalous if this much-needed finance falls into the hands of people still prepared to use violence, intimidation or drugs for political or personal profit.
It is good we have such a courageous person as Margaret Ritchie MLA who is prepared to set out her position so clearly. We hope negotiations with General De Chastelain will achieve a positive outcome.
