Drugs and alcohol - Public need to be aware of dangers

Under public pressure to take remedial action against growing drug violence and antisocial behaviour on our streets, especially late at night, the Government is considering the establishment of a joint strategy to deal with illegal drugs and alcohol.

A multifaceted approach is necessary, because these issues have important criminal, social and health dimensions.

Drug Strategy Minister Pat Carey has met with Health Minister Mary Harney to devise a joint awareness strategy. Alcohol is a legal drug, but its abuse is again developing into a serious social problem.
