The value of a good education was never more apparent than in the Celtic Tiger economy but a proper education is being denied to some by problems in the school transport system, according to the Children’s Ombudsman Emily Logan.

Some children are prevented from using school transport as a result of eligibility rules, or by physical disabilities. The Children’s Ombudsman insists that the system of eligibility needs revision.

At the same time there are indications that those on the buses are endangered by a failure to enforce safety measures. The Department of Education admits that safety initiatives for students travelling on school buses have not had the desired impact.
