Amnesty should defend most basic human right

IN calling for the legal availability of abortion in certain circumstances, Amnesty International can no longer credibly describe itself as a human rights defender.

While I welcome the news that the Irish section of Amnesty has stated it will not be implementing the organisation’s new policy on abortion, the fact remains that Amnesty International now supports abortion.

Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states: “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.”

The right to life is the most basic and important human right. Abortion is not a human right; it is a human wrong because it is the direct and deliberate taking of an innocent human life.

Amnesty International would better serve humanity in general, and women’s rights in particular, if they worked to ensure that the right to life of all human beings, both born and unborn, is upheld under national and international law.
