THE news last week that senior garda officers have tentatively sanctioned a second Love Ulster rally in Dublin this summer must be viewed with some concern.

While the right to assemble and march, within the parameters of the law and with due recognition given to codes of civilised behaviour, is paramount, the inclusion of members of the Orange Order and up to 30 loyalist bands can only be regarded as an attempt by the principal organiser, Willie Frazer, of FAIR (Families Acting for Innocent Relatives) to provoke a reaction.

If this proposed march, as Mr Frazer claims, is to highlight the suffering of victims of violence in the North, why is it confined to Protestant victims of republican violence?
